Feb. 3rd 6:30pm – 7:30 pm – KRC 2021 TOWN HALL MEETING

To – the Kelowna Riding Club Community and Friends

It has come to the Kelowna Riding Club (KRC) Board’s attention that some of our community would like to re-visit the annual winter closure of the KRC grounds.  As most of you know, 2020 has been a financially difficult year for many equestrian businesses and the KRC is no exception.

Our inability to host shows and raise revenue in 2020 along with the lack of financial leadership at the KRC over the preceding years has left the KRC (at this moment in time) in a very tenuous fiscal position.

These financial issues were addressed at the recent AGM.   As to the issue of the KRC grounds closure, historically the grounds have been closed over the winter months due to weather and presumably safety concern for users. The grounds have reopened in the Spring with the return of better weather.  These closures have been documented from time to time on the KRC Facebook page and website.  While in the past, there has been some inconsistency in the posting of the winter closure, the KRC grounds have been closed for riding year over year including in 2016, 2018/2019, 2019/2020 and 2020 as a result of COVID.

In late Nov 2020, when the KRC grounds were under 4-6” of water and freezing temperatures fast approaching, the decision was made by the Board to notify the KRC community of our annual closure.  In order to address the confusion that seems to have arisen from this notification and in the interests of community inclusiveness, the KRC Board would like to hear from you on this issue and more particularly, discuss possible alternatives to a wholescale winter closure.

To this end, the KRC Board will hold a community or town hall style Zoom meeting on Wed. February 3 2021 between 6:30 and 7:30pm to hear from any interested community members on the topic of the winter grounds closure along with your suggestions of alternatives to closure which address the KRC’s current funding limitations.

The KRC Board is made up of hard working, dedicated volunteers who have taken on the responsibility of leading the Kelowna Riding Club through 2021 and into the future.  Collectively, we all want to provide the best possible service to our community taking into account our financial circumstances and in compliance with our Mission or Purposes Statement which reads:

The purposes of the Club are to:

  1. Encourage safe knowledgeable horsemanship and promote high standards of ethics, sportsmanship and the welfare of the horse.
  2. Bring together those who are interested in equestrian pursuits for mutual enjoyment of and benefit from such pursuits.
  3. Organise, promote and manage such affairs as horse shows, horse trials, rides, lectures and demonstrations, or such other events as may be considered by the members to be appropriate to the purposes of the Club.

Please join us to share your views on the matter of the KRC grounds closure by registering with Julia Norman at kelownaridingclub.membership@gmail.com

A Zoom invite will be sent shortly before the meeting.   In terms of process, this meeting is intended to be an opportunity for your KRC Board to hear from you with a view to further exploring this issue and possible solutions.

To facilitate an orderly meeting please advise Ms. Norman if you wish to speak by February 2.

There will be an opportunity to be added to the speaker’s list during the meeting. There will also be a time limit for comments. A Q & A session may be available if time permits.
